Heroes: Bezalel & Oholiab

Is your life centered on the Son? It's so easy to get distracted by the many lusts of the world.

My Heroes of the Faith

Ever heard of Bezalel? How about Oholiab? Their names are buried deep inside the treasures of the final chapters of Exodus. Perhaps "their" chapter is overshadowed by the following chapter about the golden calf. Every Sunday School believer knows that story.

Bezalel and Oholiab now hold a special place in my heart, although I probably won't be remembering their names for all of time. But maybe that's the point of their story. To be overshadowed by the glories and grace of the LORD.

Their story is found in Exodus 31. Chapters 25-30 go into agonizing (or is it glorious?) detail of how the LORD's dwelling place and center of worship is to be constructed and consecrated. This includes the ark of the covenant, the tabernacle, the altars, the priests' garments, the sacrifices for the priests, and all other related features. These details are very important to satisfying God's holiness and glory; if done improperly, the result could be death.

In Exodus 31, God reveals His chosen instruments to construct these things. Bezalel and Oholiab. Verse 2 says He has "called by name" these men. This is God's initiative in choosing people to fulfill His commands. Thankfully verse 3 also exists. God not only called them but also filled them with His Spirit, ability, intelligence, knowledge, and all craftsmanship!

Verse 6 is even more confirming of the grace of God: He gave ability to all able men, that they may make what He commanded. Not just these two leaders, but every person involved in this project was called and empowered by God Himself.

Brothers and sisters, we are given the same and more in Christ! He has sent us His Spirit (John 14:26); He has given us His Word which equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1); He has promised to be with us till the end of the age (Matthew 28:18-20).

Bezalel and Oholiab had responsibilities of monumental importance. Tasks way beyond their abilities and training. Have you ever felt that way about what the LORD is calling you to do? I know I do, often. But thanks be to God, who not only graciously calls but also graciously gives us everything we need!

I pray these "heroes" of faith encourage you too. The LORD calls each of us to follow Him in obedience and sacrifice. Our lives are designed for His worship. Walk by faith alone!
